Leap Froggin’ It

The Times has a product overview (sales pitch) for Leap Frog’s new starter laptop.

“ClickStart: My First Computer, from Leapfrog, is intended to transform your TV into a computing center for preschoolers. It consists of a wireless keyboard with mouse that can sit in a child’s lap, and an infrared receiving base that plugs into your TV’s audio-video jacks.”

But wouldn’t a set of Bluetooth enabled blocks that interact with a receiver on your television be more fun?

The QWERTY keyboard and mouse are on their way out as the archetypical user interfaces. If Leap Frog really wanted to do something interesting they’d start migrating their vast customer base towards more innovative and proprietary interaction models.

It’s a lot easier these days to make money being fresh, and yet so many product designers choose to make such boring stuff. Maybe they all just need to take a break and go play with some blocks.
